# Day & Night

The day and night sides of the Earth are determined automatically from the Sun direction. As the Sun rotates around the globe, the day–night boundary follows accordingly.

Night-side illumination and overall scene brightness can be adjusted independently using the controls below.

Both parameters on this page are animatable in Level Sequencer.

## Night Side Fill Light Intensity

`Night Side Fill Light Intensity` controls an additional fill light applied to the night side of the Earth.

Since the surface naturally becomes very dark when it faces away from the Sun, this light can be used to preserve some visible surface detail for artistic purposes. Lower values produce a darker night side, while higher values reveal more of the unlit surface.

Set the value to **`0` lux** if no additional night-side fill lighting is desired.

## Exposure Compensation

`Exposure Compensation` adjusts the overall brightness of the rendered scene without changing the intensity of the individual light sources.

The default setup uses a fixed exposure baseline of EV100 `14`, while this parameter provides a convenient way to fine-tune the final image. Positive values make the image brighter, while negative values make it darker.

The default value of `0.7` is tuned for the standard Earth Atlas lighting setup and can be adjusted to suit a particular shot or visual style.

For additional exposure and post-processing controls, use the built-in `PostProcess` component in `BP_EarthEnvironment`.
