# Atmosphere & Starfield

Earth Atlas 80K uses Unreal Engine's built-in `SkyAtmosphere` component for atmospheric rendering. The component is preconfigured for the scale and appearance of the Earth used in the project and normally requires no additional setup.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Atmosphere quality**

Earth Atlas 80K includes `r.SkyAtmosphere.AerialPerspectiveLUT.FastApplyOnOpaque=0` in `DefaultEngine.ini`. This disables the faster low-resolution Aerial Perspective path for opaque surfaces, helping reduce atmospheric artifacts in cinematic and orbital views at the cost of some rendering performance.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Advanced users can select the built-in `SkyAtmosphere` component in `BP_EarthEnvironment` for additional atmospheric controls.

The starfield consists of three independent star layers with different visual roles — **Base Stars**, **Bright Stars**, and **Accent Stars** — combined with a separate **Nebula** layer.

The **Base Stars** layer forms a dense background of many small, mostly dim stars, while the **Bright Stars** layer adds fewer, more prominent points that stand out more clearly against the background. The **Accent Stars** layer contains only a small number of the brightest stars, creating sparse visual highlights across the starfield.

The Nebula is a stylized background element intended to add depth and visual interest to cinematic shots rather than represent a physically accurate astronomical sky.

All parameters on this page are animatable in Level Sequencer except `Base Stars Intensity`, `Bright Stars Intensity`, and `Accent Stars Intensity`.

## Stars Orientation

`Stars Orientation` rotates the entire starfield around the Earth.

Because the Nebula layer is intentionally non-uniform, rotating the starfield can significantly change the background composition. Use this parameter to position brighter or more detailed areas of the Nebula where they best complement a particular shot.

## Nebula Intensity

`Nebula Intensity` controls the brightness of the Nebula layer independently from the stars.

Lower values create a subtle background presence, while higher values make the Nebula more prominent in the composition.

## Nebula Desaturation

`Nebula Desaturation` reduces the color saturation of the Nebula. The range is `0` to `1`. A value of `0` preserves the original colors, while `1` produces a fully desaturated grayscale result.

## Nebula Hue Shift

`Nebula Hue Shift` shifts the colors of the Nebula while preserving its overall brightness and structure.

The range is `0` to `1`. Use it to adjust the Nebula palette to better match the color composition of a shot.

## Star Layer Intensities

The starfield is divided into three independent layers:

* `Base Stars Intensity` controls the main field of smaller background stars.
* `Bright Stars Intensity` controls the brighter and more prominent stars.
* `Accent Stars Intensity` controls the strongest highlight stars.

Adjusting the layers independently makes it possible to change the visual balance and prominence of different stars without modifying the source textures.

## Starfield Intensity

`Starfield Intensity` is the master intensity control for all three star layers.

Use it to increase or decrease the overall brightness of the starfield while preserving the relative balance between Base Stars, Bright Stars, and Accent Stars.
